The city council in Padua, in northern Italy, has voted to create a domestic partner registry for same-sex and unmarried opposite-sex couples. The leftist coalition-dominated council voted 26-7 in favor of the motion, making the city the first in Italy to give any official recognition to gay and lesbian couples.
The registry has little legal authority, only covering areas in which the city has jurisdiction. Still, it was hailed by LGBT rights supporters as a significant victory, and assailed by conservatives as an affront to the "sanctity of marriage".
But of course the conservatives will haul out that garbage again.

The Vatican issued an immediate denouncement. The official Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano accused the council of allowing "a parallel family" structure and reminded those who voted for it of the Church's position on same-sex unions.
Yeah, we don't really need to be reminded, but thanks anyway.
Meanwhile, a panel of conservative rabbis gave the OK for same-sex commitment ceremonies and ordination of gays within Conservative Judaism.
Though stopping short of endorsing same-sex marriage, the rabbis wanted to allow commitment ceremonies "because in Jewish sexual ethics, promiscuity is not acceptable either by heterosexuals or by homosexuals, and we do in fact have both a Jewish and a social and a medical need to try to confirm those unions," said Rabbi Elliot Dorff of Los Angeles, one of the authors of the change.
I've never participated in any commitment ceremony with txrad although we've been together more than 16 years. Does that still make us promiscuous? Just curious.
