CAIRO, Egypt - Al-Qaida in Iraq said in a Web statement posted Monday that a militant named Abu Hamza al-Muhajer was the group's new leader. Al-Muhajer succeeds Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who was killed Wednesday by a U.S. airstrike on his hideout northeast of Baghdad, Iraq.

Bombs went off in two parked cars in Baghdad on Monday, killing nine people and wounding 51. The first blast occurred in Sadr City, a sprawling Shiite slum, killing four people and wounding 38, said police Lt. Ahmed Qassim. The second explosion was in western Baghdad and killed five people and wounded 13, said police Lt. Maitham Abdul-Razza.
A suicide car bomber plowed into a gas station in northern Iraq, killing four civilians and wounding more than 40, police Brig. Gen. Abdul-Hamid Khalaf said. The explosion occurred about 1:15 p.m. in Tal Afar, 260 miles northwest of Baghdad.
A bomb also struck a minivan in southern Baghdad, killing six people and wounding 10, police Capt. Jamil Hussein said.
Elsewhere, a roadside bomb detonated next to a police patrol east of Kirkuk, but missed and struck a civilian car. One person was killed, while two more were injured, police said.
